Jasper Meaning and Uses - Crystal Vaults (3)Introduction to the Meaning and Uses of Jasper

The unique artistry of Jasper is that of Nature itself – golden sunshine, a nighttime sky, poppy fields or a deep green forest, desert sands, the undulating ocean, red rock canyons, sweeping mountains. Each stone is a masterpiece of the Creator, bold and primitive in style, solid and earthy in form, with a warm, harmonious energy that resonates with the primal self.

An elemental Earth stone, Jasper’s frequency is slow and constant, aligned with the electromagnetic energies of the planet. It enables one to be more present in the physical body and conscious of Nature and one’s surroundings. It encourages one to celebrate moments of isolation to absorb, reflect, and connect with these energies and enkindles an awareness of the spiritual connection we hold with all living things. [Simmons, XXIX, 215-219][Melody, 344-345]

Known as the “Supreme Nurturer,” Jasper is a stone of grounding and stability, providing comfort and security, strength and healing. Its presence balances the aura to a level of wholeness and peace, and acts as a reminder that one is not here on the physical plane simply for oneself, but to bring joy and substance to others. [Simmons, 215-219][Melody, 344-345][Hall, 154-155][Margherita, 505-507]

Historically, Jasper is traceable to all ancient peoples and civilizations. Worn by shamans, priests and kings, it was considered sacred and a powerful protection stone, for both the physical world and in the spiritual realm. Amulets of Jasper were carved by the Egyptians with symbols and inscriptions from the Book of the Dead and buried with mummified remains for safe passage in the after life. It was highly utilized in many cultures for engraving cylinder seals, signet rings, and special talismans depicting astrological and religious images. It was the twelfth stone in the Breastplate of the Jewish High Priest, and the apostle Peter is supposed to have derived his name from Jasper, the rock upon which Christ would build his church. To the medieval world and the Native Americans, Jasper was “the rain bringer” and highly regarded as a stone for dowsing. [Mella, 87-88][Melody, 344-345][Kunz, 90, 122, 226-229, 276][Fernie, 199]

Jasper is a dense, opaque, microcrystalline variety of Quartz. Fibrous and grainy varieties of Quartz are often grouped together and referred to as Chalcedony, though Jasper’s microcrystals are laid out in large, sugar-like grains rather than the fibrous layers of Chalcedony or Agate. It occurs in nodules or as fillings in fissures and may be found all over the world, in nearly every color. Jasper is colored by oxides of iron and known for its deep earthy tones of red, yellow, brown and green, sometimes in shades of blue or purple, and displays wonderful contrasts in its banding, inclusions, “pictures,” and small circular patterns. Its name is derived from the Greek iaspis, meaning “agate,” the Assyrian ashpu, and the Hebrew jashpeh. [www.mindat.org][Simmons, 215][Lecouteux, 177][Megemont, 100][Fernie, 173]

There is a wide variety of Jaspers, characterized by color, form, and similarities to places or animals found in nature. Many are named for the regions where they are mined; others are named by those who discovered them. Though far too extensive to cover here, we will mention a few of the more popular and familiar Jaspers, some with their own pages and additional metaphysical properties. Multi-colored Jasper carries the properties of its dominant color, or colors, while still drawing energies from its subtle hues.

  • Black Jasper, or Basanite, is a flinty form, one of the rarer Jaspers. It empowers supreme physical and mental efforts, and is highly shielding against curses, threats, and danger in high risk occupations. In polished form, it is an excellent scrying stone for discerning what is hidden. Black Jasper has the ability to take one deep into an altered state of consciousness, and facilitates prophetic dreams and visions
  • Blue Jasper forms in various shades of blue, often swirled with dark patches or veining, and is sometimes artificially treated to enhance the color. Linked with nobility of spirit and purpose, it imparts the courage to speak out against injustice and to risk unpopularity to defend the vulnerable. It is the perfect anti-stress stone for those in charge of others’ well-being, and for older children and teenagers to carry to resist being led into unwise behavior or risky situations.
  • Brecciated Jasper (Jasper containing Hematite), is predominantly brick red, veined or patterned with brown, black and beige, often with clear crystal inclusions. Its strong, grounding energies are remarkable for attaining emotional stability, and bouncing back after dealing with a conflict or crisis. It increases vitality and rejuvenation, and promotes self-confidence and creative inspiration.
  • Brown Jasper ranges from deep chocolate brown, gold- to reddish-brown, to tan or ivory, and is characterized by artful banding, flow patterns and veining. It includes some specific formations such as Picture Jasper, Bruneau Jasper, and Bat Cave Jasper. Brown Jasper is connected to the Earth and encourages a deep ecological awareness. It brings stability and balance, and is particularly grounding as a worry stone, or for dissolving a sudden rush of fear, anger, or panic. It facilitates deep meditation and centering, and grants access to past lives for karmic healing.
  • Dalmatian Jasper is pale gray, cream or beige-brown with dark spots and resembles the coat of a Dalmatian. It is a protective and healing stone, fortifying the spirit and encouraging a sense of playfulness. It counters disillusionment, cynicism and skepticism, strengthens family bonds and long-term friendships, and has a calming influence for children and animals
  • Green Jasper, though a component of many of the multi-colored Jaspers, is most rare and prized when it forms as a single green color. It ranges from pale spring green to a deep tea or olive green, and has been revered since antiquity for its powers to soothe the spirit, banish ghosts and evil thoughts, increase fertility, and bring in rain. Green Jasper also balances obsessive tendencies and restores harmony to the emotional body, allowing one to gain control over thoughts. It is the ultimate sleep stone
  • Kambaba Jasper, sometimes called Green Stromatolite Jasper, contains swirls and orbs of deep green and black; one of the more exotic Jaspers. It contains the earliest records of life on Earth, fossilized algae and other primeval microorganisms, and is a marvelous stone for bringing peace and tranquility to troubled minds. It strengthens those whose hearts have been deeply hurt, and provides grounding and protection in ancient places when tuning in to the people who once lived there.
  • Leopardskin Jasper is Orbicular Jasper, usually in dominant shades of green or orange, with dark leopard-like banding and glassy inclusions. It reflects the duality between dark and light, teaching one to recognize dark as a complement to light rather than the opposite. This is a shamanic shape-shifter’s stone, helpful in journeying and getting in touch with one’s power animal. Leopardskin also strengthens the sense of self, attracting the right energies into one’s life to heal and move beyond past traumas, while being guided to new opportunities.
  • Mookaite Jasper, or Mookaite (Chert), carries a predominantly reddish-rose color, marbled or striped with bands of yellow, cream, tan, white or brown; named for the Mooka Creek area in Western Australia where it is mined. Mookaite is an Aboriginal Mother Earth stone known for its healing and connection with the positive energy currents of the Earth. It increases life force in the physical body, and promotes an ageless spirit willing to accept change and seek new experiences. It awakens the energy of one’s own instinct, and is an excellent stone for pregnant parents to communicate with their unborn child
  • Ocean Jasper, also called Sea Jasper, is rare Orbicular Jasper collected from the remote shores of northwestern Madagascar and can only be mined at low tide; it is sometimes referred to as The Atlantis Stone. Its multi-colored circles, contour lines, and bands of opaque stone are interspersed with druse, and spiritually represent the interconnectedness of all things. It carries a gentle nurturing energy that, when used regularly, assists in developing self-love and empathy for others. Its orbicular pattern facilitates circular breathing and enhances meditation. Ocean Jasper may be used to connect to Atlantis and unlock the mystic knowledge held within the stone.
  • Orbicular Jasper describes several varieties of Jasper displaying perfect circles throughout the stone that create its focal point, and usually its dominant color. Its flow of energy is steady, and encourages patience and the acceptance of responsibility. A helpful stone for getting things done, it is particularly conducive to pursuits based on service. The circular markings resonate with circular breathing and make a wonderful transition aid in meditation. Orbicular patterns are most prominent in Ocean or Sea Jasper, Leopardskin Jasper, and Poppy Jasper.
  • Picture Jasper is said to be the Earth Mother speaking to her children. It forms in remarkable bands and flow patterns of browns, black, tan, blue and ivory, and exhibits a hidden message or “picture” from the past. It is marvelous for inner journeying to sacred sites and ancient civilizations, and for connecting with Earth’s consciousness. An excellent stone for creative vision, initiative and boosting confidence, it is an ideal aid for starting one’s own business. Wear for long periods of time to bring hidden thoughts, grief, fears, and hopes to the surface for examination.
  • Poppy Jasper is a variation of Brecciated Jasper characterized by orbicular patterns of bright red “poppies” amid mottled shades of brown, black, yellow or white. A joyful stone associated with poppies and remembrance, Poppy Jasper brings cheerfulness and vitality, reminding humanity to help one another. This stone can be gently stimulating, or fiery in passion and intensity as needed. It provides the impetus for variety and new experiences, and encourages the development of fresh ideas.
  • Rainbow Jasper, also called Fancy Jasper or Multi-colored Jasper, is a steady wholesome healer, resonating with all the chakras to bring balance to the physical body, and focus to the mind and intellect. It tempers procrastination and helps organize an overactive mind into more linear thought, preventing one from getting caught up in worry over the past or future, and inspiring one to work through issues of the present. It is also ideal for rejuvenating one’s creative power and refining mental processes in order to work through intricate thoughts, ideas or puzzles
  • Rainforest Jasper is opaque Jasper in dominant shades of moss green and white, swirled with veins of earthy hues. It is a stone of connection to the Earth and living things, and honors the highest spiritual teachings from Nature. It awakens a sense of joy at life’s simplicity, and carries a healing, invigorating energy of hope and renewal. It is a marvelous stone for Earth-healing and working with the devic realm, and may also be used in retrieving knowledge of herbal-healing from the far past, especially wisdom passed through one’s ancestral matriarchs
  • Red Jasper is red to terracotta brown, sometimes mixed with other minerals. A stone of physical strength and energy, Red Jasper stimulates gently and steadily, enhancing stamina and endurance, and increasing the amount of chi, or life force, in one’s aura. It is a stone of health and passion, and brings the courage to face unpleasant tasks and to rectify unjust situations. It provides vivid dream recall, and is a powerful stone for those who work with Earth energies to make a deep connection with Earth spirits and guardians of the leys and sacred sites.
  • Royal Plume Jasper, also called Purple Jasper or Plum Jasper, forms in shades of purple with plume-like markings. This is a noble Jasper of spiritual wisdom and is conducive to working with archangels or deity figures from different cultures. It also makes a great power stone for studying a formal spiritual path, healing tradition, or training for mediumship. Stimulating the Crown Chakra, this stone creates an aura of wisdom and authority, and can enhance one’s status and power. It assists in preserving one’s dignity, and helps reduce contradictions that make decision-making or clear action difficult. It calms the emotional body, increases memory skills, and has the ability to focus multiple energies together for a single purpose
  • Unakite Jasper is a combination of Red Jasper and Epidote solidly bound together, and is the crystal of harmonious relationships. Its pink and green colors balance aspects of the heart, lifts spirits when one is down, and helps to release deep-seated emotions in a slow and gentle way. It promotes patience and persistence, and gradually eliminates bad habits and the thoughts and patterns that perpetuate them. It is a great stone for children’s sensitive emotions, and is particularly good for helping them bounce back from sorrow, grief or disappointment. This stone is wonderful for anyone who feels a little lost, overwhelmed, or has trouble focusing on the here and now.
  • Yellow Jasper is mustard, sandy or burnished yellow with subtle flow patterns or veining. It is a stone of endurance, perseverance and tenacity, and shields against others’ negativity. Worn for long periods of time, it eases chronic worries and builds self-confidence, attracting others for friendship or to help with a goal. It supports steady learning, and transmits healing and empowering Earth energies, especially when meditating outdoors.

Jasper Meaning and Uses - Crystal Vaults (31)Jasper in Ancient Lore and Legend

In many ancient civilizations, Jasper was believed to be heavily charged with mysterious and sometimes contradictory properties. Red Jasper stimulated without being excessive; Yellow Jasper enhanced common sense but also the need for conformity; and Green Jasper of all one color harmonized gently, yet could change the opinion of even the most stubborn person. [Megemont, 100-101]

Legends claim if one has worn Jasper since childhood, he or she will be protected from drowning and ghosts; and those who gird their bodies with it are protected from accident and will have all their wishes fulfilled. Opinions differ as to whether it should be set in silver or gold, but all are unanimous in saying it should be worn on the right side, and should be worn chastely after it has been blessed and consecrated. [Lecouteux, 177-178]

Jaspers were prized by even the earliest physicians as the most powerful astringents, regulators of metabolism and colic, and strengtheners of the stomach and digestive organs. The Roman physician, Galen, prominent in the first century A.D., always wore a ring set with Jasper, carved in the figure of a man with a bundle of herbs signifying the power to distinguish diseases and stop the flow of blood from any part. He declared the Jasper, particularly the green variety, should be hung about the neck to strengthen the chest and stomach, as did the Egyptian King, Nechepsus, who wore a Green Jasper cut in the shape of a dragon over his digestive organs and reported it to be wonderfully strengthening to their functions. [Mella, 42-43][Fernie, 173, 175][Kunz, 385][Lecouteux, 180]

Jasper was a significant stone in nearly all religious and cultural histories throughout the world. In a Mesopotamian creation legend, the god Marduk (Jupiter) formed three heavens or spheres above the Earth, with the lower one being created from Jasper. On it he drew the constellations. [Hall III, 112]

In Viking and German legends, the hilt of the magical sword of Siegfried, the dragon-slayer, was inlaid with Red Jasper to give him courage. Red Jasper was also called the blood of Mother Earth among some Native North American tribes, and in ancient Egypt was linked with the fertilizing blood of Mother Isis. Jaspers were often used for carving texts on sacred amulets for placement on the bodies of the dead to insure safe passage into the afterlife. [Eason, 66][Kunz, 226-229]

Amulets called magatama (crooked jewels) have been found in Japanese graves of the Iron Age, formed of various materials, including Jasper, and were strung together with beads and used to adorn the statues of the gods. They were employed as imperial insignia and distinctive marks of high rank. [Kunz, 265] Jasper is also highly prized in China, and is the material from which the seal of the Emperor is made. [Fernie, 175]

To the Hebrews, Jasper was Yashpheh, the twelfth stone in the breastplate of the High Priest, inscribed with the tribal name Assher, though some list it as the tribe of Benjamin. Most writers agree this stone was the highly valued Green Jasper. Based on the stones known and used at the time, it is also believed the original breastplate of Aaron may have contained Red Jasper as the Odem, or first stone, and Yellow Jasper as the Tarshish, or tenth stone. [Kunz, 276, 289, 301][Fernie, 173]

In Christian tradition, Jasper represented the young vigor of faith and was dedicated to the apostle Peter as the hard and solid rock upon which Christ would build his church. [Fernie, 45, 199][Lecouteax, 179] It was also the gleaming material from which the city walls and first foundation of the New Jerusalem would be made. In the Apocalypse, St. John sees the Eternal appear on a throne of Jasper, representing eternal youth, renewal, and revelation. [Kunz, 302-303][Megemont, 102]

Jasper was considered a sacred stone of protection for shamans of the Native American Indians during their magical practices and in continued adherence to the “old ways.” Jasper containing the yellow color protected and assisted in times of travel, both physical and spiritual; that which contained the red color induced health and re-birth, freshness in ideas and strategies; and Jasper containing the blue color was used to connect one with the “after” worlds. [Melody, 344]

Spider Jasper, a rarer variety containing earthy browns with white or dark spider-web markings, is believed to contain the power of the wise spider, represented by the Native North American goddess, Grandmother Spider, who created people from four different-colored clays as the nations of the Earth, then led them from the underworld into the open where Grandfather Sun breathed life into them. [Eason, 298]

Jasper was ideal for engraving, and from the earliest ages was heavily employed in the glyptic arts of many cultures for its special talismanic virtues.

  • A lion or an archer on a Jasper gives help against poison and cures from fever. [Kunz, 133]
  • A Jasper bearing a huntsman, a dog, or a stag, with God’s help, will have the power to heal one possessed of a devil (one who is insane). It also protects the owner from the devil. [Kunz, 135][Lecouteux, 179]
  • The depiction of a man, specifically Mars, on a piece of Jasper with a shield in his left hand and an idol or weapon in his right, with vipers as his feet and a cock or lion as his head, wearing a breastplate, enables its owner to battle his enemies and obtain victory. It also protects him from poison. This is the depiction on the sacred Abrasax stone. [Lecouteux, 179]
  • A Jasper depicting an armed Mars, or a virgin wrapped in a toga with a laurel branch in hand, makes its owner powerful and capable of anything, and grants protection from violent death, drowning, demons, and adversity; it also helps him obtain all he desires. [Lecouteux, 179][Kunz, 140]
  • Worn on the chest, a Jasper carved with a kestrel, or kite, rending a snake and placing the head of an iulian fish beneath the stone gets rid of stomach pain, stimulates appetite, and provides good digestion. [Lecouteux, 179][Fernie, 174]
  • Wearing a Jasper adorned with the image of a hare protects a person from attack by demons and spirits. If adorned with a dog, it protects against dropsy (edema), venom, and dog bites. [Lecouteux, 179]
  • A wolf carved on Jasper protects from guile and prevents one from spouting wild claims. [Lecouteux, 180]
  • A Jasper with an image of an emperor with head held high brings the love of all creatures, and its possessor will obtain all he desires. [Lecouteux, 180]
  • A Jasper engraved with the sacred symbol of the cross protects its owner from drowning. [Kunz, 140]
